Work From Home Week - Watch For Scams

By Laura Burke

So it's National Work From Home Week. It runs from October 1-7, 2010, although I did find some other sites that had the dates as October 3-9. Either way, it's here!

There are millions of people around the world who work from home, doing anything from medical transcription to being a personal assistant to affiliate marketing.

One big section of the population who would like to work from home but sometimes have a hard time getting started is SAHMs, otherwise known as Stay At Home Moms. They'd love to be WAHMs, Work At Home Moms, but it can be hard to figure out what kind of pursuit will give them the best income for their time.

I'd like to focus for a moment on the things they should NOT get involved in.

There are a lot of Google scams out there, not promoted or endorsed by Google, but by scammers using their name and reputation. If you see a "news" site that gushes about how a stay-at-home mom living near you gets checks from Google each week for "posting links," don't fall for it. There is no such work-at-home opportunity from Google. In fact, Google has sued scammers using their name in this way.

Also beware of any site or company that asks for money in order to employ you from home. If you buy training to start YOUR OWN online business, that's one thing, but paying to work for someone else is a sure sign of a scam.

You'll also see a lot of advertising about filling out surveys, placing classified ads, stuffing envelopes, and things like that. Most are scams, or at the very least, they make unrealistic promises in regard to the money you'll make.

Speaking of unrealistic earning potential, even many of the legitimate programs and courses out there are guilty of this. They may offer solid information and effective techniques for making money online, but they lead you to believe that you'll be rich within a matter of days or weeks. That's a one-in-a-million shot.

If you're serious about making money at home on the Internet, find someone who gives you the straight facts and who emphasizes the fact that working from home is just that: WORKING from home. Anything that pays decent money is going to take some work.

Do your research and don't be taken in by scams. There are very real, very lucrative opportunities out there; you just have to find them.

I am an affiliate marketing teacher and writer. I really enjoy teaching people how to make money from home. I've released a beginners' affiliate marketing course called the "Affiliate Marketing Schoolbook" to assist those who are overwhelmed or unsure of how to get started. My site, Skip the Scams, Get the Skills, helps affiliate marketing newbies to "skip the scams and get the skills" so they can make money at home online.
