Why you need to back up your data NOW!
You hear it all the time from your annoying anal-retentive friends and acquaintances. "You DO back up your computer regularly, don't you?" If you can't answer with a simple and emphatic "YES!" then read on. 1. Stuff happens. Computers can be working fine one minute and dying an agonizing death the next. Beverages get spilled. Laptops get dropped. Hard drives spin their last go-round. You never know when it's going to happen, although you can be sure that when it does, hours, weeks, possibly years of work could go POOF! 2. Other stuff happens. Power surges due to electrical problems or lightning strikes can zap the sensitive innards of a computer into a lifeless state. Files get corrupted by viruses or even for no apparent reason and pretty soon you have a full-fledged computer emergency on your hands. 3. Kids happen. One minute they're downloading games onto your computer, and the next they're complaining that the computer won't respond, the mouse won't move, and the blue screen of death has appeared. And they can also be the likely culprits in the above-mentioned spillage and droppage. 4. You happen. Maybe you threw something away that you didn't mean to throw away, and you picked this week, of all weeks, to empty the recycle bin or trash. Or you changed something in a file and discover it needs to be changed back, but you can't for the life of you remember how, and now your file isn't working at all. Is that enough, or shall I go on? If you have nothing on your computer that you would need to use or find again, then disregard the above. But if losing any of your photos, music, work files, or whatever would result in tears, frustration, and loss of sleep, then BACK IT UP! Immediately, if not sooner! You can burn files to a CD if they're not too large or extensive, but a better bet is an external hard drive or other more robust backup system. They're not terribly expensive, especially when you consider that you're buying insurance against having to redo hours and hours and hours of work, and in some cases, having to accept the fact that you lost something that is irreplaceable. Just do it! You won't regret it.

Contributor's Note
I write this from the perspective of bitter experience as well as from sweet relief once I had learned my lesson. The sweet relief is way better, believe me.
