Reminiscing about marbles

Close your eyes and think back to those days in the schoolyard (or in your own back yard) playing marbles. You might have called them shooters or mibs, and you could have played with a circle scratched in the dirt or a hole dug in the ground, but the basic premise was the same: win your opponents’ marbles!

Marbles provided hours of enjoyment, not only in the playing, but also in admiring their beauty. Agates, puries, and cat-eyes each had their own charm. And they made a pleasant clacking noise in your pocket or the little drawstring pouch.

Where were they first invented? No one knows for sure. They have been found by archaeologists in excavations of ancient civilizations, so one thing's for sure: they've been around awhile! Over the years, materials like clay, ivory, stone, agate, and glass have been used to form these little spherical playthings.

Today, many types of marbles are highly prized by collectors, and a marble collecting craze is in full swing. Art glass marbles and other handmade creations are quite dazzling in their beauty and can fetch a surprising price. Put on display in a special case or stand, they are a cool conversation piece. At the same time, they transport us back to a simpler time when video games didn’t exist and we actually played outside.

Contributor's Note

I hope you enjoyed reading this Intel as much as I enjoyed writing it. I also write short stories and novels as well as content for my growing number of web sites. Subjects range from things like weight loss motivation and caregiving for elderly parents to more lighthearted topics like making honeymoon plans, marbles, and American Idol. My best to you — Laura Burke
